The projector as instrument by Floris Vanhoof

An immediate form of image and sound creation, playing with the possibilities of film projectors, taking advantage of the mechanics of machines in film performances, discovering what you can do when you have several film projectors running together.
Multi-projector performances allow artist-filmmakers the possibilities to expand their world of light-pictorial techniques. With customised 16mm projectors, the conventional tools become personal instruments used to transform loops of pure black-and-white frames into an immersive perceptual phenomenon.
Stroboscopic, abstract forms pulsing on the screen, slowly transform as additional, overlapping projectors create strange halos, odd 3D expansion and contraction. As more projectors are added,… Continue reading The projector as instrument by Floris Vanhoof

Workshop: Handmade Emulsion – by Lindsay McIntyre

The alchemical nature of moving images will be explored in this immersive workshop on handmade emulsion. In this 2 day workshop, experience a taste of 19th century darkroom magic and create an B&W silver gelatin emulsion on 16mm film. Handmade emulsions have a distinct and wonderful look to them that cannot be duplicated by other means and provide a wonderful basis for nearly endless experimentation.
An intensive introduction into the dark arts of homebrewed film emulsion will give participants the necessary theory and tools to formulate their own black and white film emulsion and begin to explore a variety of options for coating the emulsion onto 16mm film.… Continue reading Workshop: Handmade Emulsion – by Lindsay McIntyre

Strategies to Structural Film – workshop by Johann Lurf

2-day workshop with filmmaker Johann Lurf at WORM.Filmwerkplaats
Day One: Space
The workshop will present historical and recent film examples on how to approach space with the means of the moving image. These will be explained in their structural approach and also technical methods (for example optical printing and contact printing). Mathematical patterns and editing structures. Maps and their different perspectives as a guide. Camera positions and the moving camera. Three dimensional film making, and collection of visual knowledge.
Day Two: Found Footage

Existing moving imagery and its artistic use.
Concerns of aspect ratios and sound formats –… Continue reading Strategies to Structural Film – workshop by Johann Lurf

Oxberry Optical Printer | Workshop

A hands-on introduction workshop on the Oxberry Optical Printer.
How to work with optical printing and create special effects on 16mm and 35mm film?
In this workshop participants will learn how to operate the machine: how to load the projectors and camera, operation of the controls, bi-packing, matte printing, double exposures, making blow-ups en re-photographing (found) footage.
The workshop is lead by Jan Scholten, analog restorer at EYE Institute Amsterdam, and with his former company Image Creations for almost forty years the Dutch specialist in analog special effects made on optical printers and rostrum cameras. Amongst other films, he has made the analog opticals for Prospero’s Books (1991) a film by Peter Greenaway.… Continue reading Oxberry Optical Printer | Workshop

Workshop tour – Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it ! – Contact Printing in COLOR

The Filmwerkplaats will host a “Contact Printing in COLOR ” workshop led by the film industry expert Paolo Bernardini. Paolo is a lab technician from the official photochemical film restoration lab connected to the Cinemateca Portuguesa. He will share all his knowledge about the color printing process, hands-on in our Filmwerkplaats lab.
Understanding the correct Lab process in printing offers both a means to create color correct screening copies, or a means to use printing techniques to create an experimental result.
The workshop covers:
How to make a professional lab quality color print.
How to use lady strips and a densitometer to support the proper printing process.… Continue reading Workshop tour – Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it ! – Contact Printing in COLOR

Workshop tour – Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it ! – Sensitometry, densitometry: a bit of theory, but not too much !

Bringing his experience working day to day at the artist run film lab, L’abominable in Paris, Nicolas Rey will be joining us at LaborBerlin to help us develop an adequate film processing workflow. With Nicolas, we will learn how to expose control strips with a sensitometer and evaluate them with a densitometer. By using these devices in combination with our processing machines we hope to achieve consistent developing results in black and white and color.… Continue reading Workshop tour – Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it ! – Sensitometry, densitometry: a bit of theory, but not too much !

Discover the fundamental principles that will allow you to explore the inherent properties of B&W emulsions and processes.
A 16 mm workshop where you can explore theoretical elements, issued from science and the skills the use of sensitometry and densitometry.
“Sensitometry is the scientific study of light-sensitive materials” Wikipédia
“Densitometry is the quantitative measurement of optical density in light-sensitive materials, such as photographic paper or photographic film, due to exposure to light. Optical density is a result of the darkness of a developed picture and can be expressed absolutely as the number of dark spots (i.e.,… Continue reading Workshop tour – Knowing what to do, knowing how to do it! – Sensitometry, densitometry: a bit of theory, but not too much !
