An immediate form of image and sound creation, playing with the possibilities of film projectors, taking advantage of the mechanics of machines in film performances, discovering what you can do when you have several film projectors running together.
Multi-projector performances allow artist-filmmakers the possibilities to expand their world of light-pictorial techniques. With customised 16mm projectors, the conventional tools become personal instruments used to transform loops of pure black-and-white frames into an immersive perceptual phenomenon.

Following Lutz Garmsen’s Crass Masterclass LaborBerlin announces its Crass Animation Stand follow-up workshop. In this workshop participants will have the chance to learn the wide array of filmmaking tools that the animation stand offers. Taught by LaborBerlin members present at the masterclass the workshop is intended for beginners with little to no experience with the equipment.
They will learn: how to load the camera, the basic operation of the camera and controls, simple animation techniques, double exposures, fades, rear projection as well as develop and print tests.

The alchemical nature of moving images will be explored in this immersive workshop on handmade emulsion. In this 2 day workshop, experience a taste of 19th century darkroom magic and create an B&W silver gelatin emulsion on 16mm film. Handmade emulsions have a distinct and wonderful look to them that cannot be duplicated by other means and provide a wonderful basis for nearly endless experimentation.

The workshop will present historical and recent film examples on how to approach space with the means of the moving image. These will be explained in their structural approach and also technical methods (for example optical printing and contact printing). Mathematical patterns and editing structures. How to work with optical printing and create special effects on 16mm and 35mm film?
In this workshop participants will learn how to operate the machine: how to load the projectors and camera, operation of the controls, bi-packing, matte printing, double exposures, making blow-ups en re-photographing (found) footage.
The workshop is lead by Jan Scholten, analog restorer at EYE Institute Amsterdam, and with his former company Image Creations for almost forty years the Dutch specialist in analog special effects made on optical printers and rostrum cameras. The Filmwerkplaats will host a “Contact Printing in COLOR ” workshop led by the film industry expert Paolo Bernardini. Paolo is a lab technician from the official photochemical film restoration lab connected to the Cinemateca Portuguesa. He will share all his knowledge about the color printing process, hands-on in our Filmwerkplaats lab.
Understanding the correct Lab process in printing offers both a means to create color correct screening copies, or a means to use printing techniques to create an experimental result.
