Primarily, a contact printer is used to make prints of films from a negative and to also create negatives from a positive. It has the function of reproduction, which is inherent to film, allowing filmmakers to archive their works and to send copies to professional distribution networks. Beyond this basic function, which already requires some precise skills, much artistic experimentation can be explored with this equipment, such as light and densities variations, multi-layering of films and addition of filters… With the Debrie Matipo contact printer program, in a first phase, we plan to extend our knowledge and to develop our skills concerning the technical potentialities of this machine, its maintenance and reparation with the support of more experienced technicians. Then we aim to share our freshly acquired knowledge to a new generation of filmmakers. Meanwhile want to create some documentation (tutorials) that might encourage people to use this machine in the future. In a second time , our plan is to organize a residency so that a technical knowledge can be reappropriated into artistic purposes.

This master class is dedicated to the beautiful and impressive machine housed in Mire’s lab, the Debrie Tipro printer.
This mechanical gem, manufactured in the 60’s by the French firm of André Debrie, is a step printer for black and white film. Its basic function is to print both 16mm copies from a 16mm original negative by contact or reduce a 35mm original to a 16mm format by an optical process.
