Strategies to Structural Film – workshop by Johann Lurf

2-day workshop with filmmaker Johann Lurf at WORM.Filmwerkplaats

Day One: Space

The workshop will present historical and recent film examples on how to approach space with the means of the moving image. These will be explained in their structural approach and also technical methods (for example optical printing and contact printing). Mathematical patterns and editing structures. Maps and their different perspectives as a guide. Camera positions and the moving camera. Three dimensional film making, and collection of visual knowledge.

Day Two: Found Footage

Existing moving imagery and its artistic use.
Concerns of aspect ratios and sound formats – their technical parameters and ways of working with these. Copying and printing from analogue and digital sources, optical and magnetic soundtracks through time and their actual use.

Born in 1982 in Vienna Johann Lurf has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Slade School of Art in London. He graduated from Harun Farocki’s film class in 2009, has received the State Grant of Austria for Video and Media Art and participated in the Artist-in-Residence Programs at the MAK Center for Arts and Architecture in Los Angeles 2011, the SAIC in Chicago 2015 and in Tokyo 2016. His work has been shown internationally and recognized with awards in numerous exhibitions and festivals.
